History

The big idea came in late October of 1999 when our founder was walking past Rock Bottom Brewery in downtown Minneapolis reading about a new wireless standard (802.11b). He thought, “Wow, I could have a beer and wirelessly surf the Internet at the same time. This is gonna be huge”.

The first 802.11b gear hit the market in early 2000 and we had four pay-per-use Internet kiosks (SurfThing’s) wirelessly connecting to the Internet in that very same restaurant by April of 2000. It only took a few months and a measly $37 in revenue before one of us had a classic epiphany, “we’ll probably make more money if we make these free”. Sounds crazy, but it worked. We sell SurfThing’s, quality WiFi networks and support to businesses who in turn offer these for free to their customers. Free Internet is a phenomenal customer draw that also keeps customers around longer, so the restaurants and coffee shops sell more of their own products.

We also thought eye-catching animated digital ads would look great on our SurfThing’s. So we developed a killer advertising delivery, display and tracking system that enables our incredible “Billboards That Click".

Recently, SurfThing systems have developed into an exciting tool for for the retail market. The ways this industry benefits from secure WiFi networks and large screen SurfThing’s is absolutely fantastic. Our systems are used for online sales, advertising, employee applications, training and loyalty card sign ups.

We want to create a return on investment (ROI) for our customers. We love technology and have fun helping other businesses leverage our products to make their businesses better. Give us a call to see how we can help your retail or hospitality business achieve great ROI.
